# New AWS Quick Start Features Project Calico as Default Networking Solution

By [Andrew Randall](https://www.tigera.io/blog/author/andrewrandall/) on Mar 01, 2017 • 2 min read

[Heptio](http://www.heptio.com/), a new company by the founders of the [Kubernetes Project](http://kubernetes.io/), in conjunction with [Amazon](http://aws.amazon.com), [Tigera](https://www.tigera.io/), [BitNami](http://bitnami.com/), and [Twistlock](http://www.twistlock.com/), is pleased to [announce](http://blog.heptio.com/aws-quickstart-for-kubernetes-26ccaf7e1c8f#.errtpxq4u) the release of a new **[Kubernetes + Project Calico Quick Start](http://aws.amazon.com/quickstart/architecture/heptio-kubernetes/)** for AWS, with Project Calico as the **default networking solution**.

With a press of a button, this new Quick Start makes it easy to setup and deploy scalable and secure Cloud Native networks on Amazon Web Services, taking advantage of proven technologies from a variety of providers, including:

**[Kubernetes](http://kubernetes.io/)**

Kubernetes is an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. It groups containers that make up an application into logical units for easy management and discovery. Kubernetes builds upon 15 years of experience of running production workloads at Google, combined with best-of-breed ideas and practices from the community.

**[Project Calico](https://www.tigera.io/)**

Project Calico is a new approach to virtual networking and network security for containers, VMs, and bare metal services, that provides a rich set of security enforcement capabilities running on top of a highly scalable and efficient virtual network fabric.

**[BitNami](http://bitnami.com/)**

Bitnami makes server software easier to use, regardless of platform — in a VM, the cloud, or a container. Try one of their 150+ applications and development runtimes Bitnami packages and learn what makes them awesome.

**[Twistlock](http://www.twistlock.com/)**

Twistlock’s technologies are built for containers — from hardening images in development to protecting containers in production. With Twistlock you can discover and manage vulnerabilities for container images, verify image configuration and hardening settings, and take advantage of real-time vulnerability and threat protection intelligence.

Best of all, Heptio’s **[AWS Quick Start](http://aws.amazon.com/quickstart/architecture/heptio-kubernetes/)** is focused on not just ease of use, but operational sustainability, meaning the template has been carefully structured with a time-tested, enterprise-grade approach and takes advantage of both architectural and infrastructure best practices.

To get started, check out the **[CloudFormation Template](http://s3.amazonaws.com/quickstart-reference/heptio/latest/templates/kubernetes-cluster-with-new-vpc.template)** and written **[Guide](http://s3.amazonaws.com/quickstart-reference/heptio/latest/doc/heptio-kubernetes-on-the-aws-cloud.pdf)**.  And if you do not have an account with AWS, you can try them out for free at [aws.amazon.com/free](http://aws.amazon.com/free).

Kubernetes has come a long way since its debut in 2014. It’s gone from running a couple of containerized microservices to orchestrating fleets of production workloads spanning everything from AI agents to full scale VMs...

Practically no one runs a single Kubernetes cluster in production these days. Maybe that’s how it started but data sovereignty requirements, acquisitions, AI initiatives and the need for edge servers, among other considerations, have pulled...
