Istio is an open platform that provides a uniform way to connect, manage, and secure microservices. Istio supports managing traffic flows between microservices, enforcing access policies and aggregating telemetry data, all without requiring changes to the microservice code.
Flannel implements an L3 virtual network that gives a subnet to each host for use with container runtimes. Platforms like Kubernetes assume that each container (pod) has a unique, routable IP inside the cluster and flannel reduces the complexity associated with port mapping.
CNI (Container Network Interface) is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project that consists of a specification and libraries for writing plugins to configure network interfaces in Linux containers, along with a number of supported plugins. CNI concerns itself only with network connectivity of containers and removing allocated resources when the container is deleted.
